Residents in Clackmannanshire recycled the highest percentage of household waste in Scotland in 2024, figures from SEPA have shown.
The data shows a household recycling rate of 57.2% in Clackmannanshire, well ahead of the Scottish average of 44.3%. This is an increase of 5.2% from 2023 and puts us ahead of all other Scottish Local Authorities.
The Council invested in a new recycling service in 2023 with support from Zero Waste Scotland, which introduced a new grey wheeled bin for the collection of dry paper and card for recycling and a revised household waste collection.
Cllr Scott Harrison, spokesperson for Place said: “I am both delighted and proud to see these impressive figures. Clackmannanshire may be small but today we are showing Scotland what can be achieved when communities work together. This success belongs to everyone and is only made possible through the collaboration, commitment and vision of so many people. I’d like to thank our Council staff for their innovation, leadership and drive to deliver real change and also to the residents of Clackmannanshire, your committment to recycling and sustainability has been outstanding and shows what can be done when a community acts with purpose and pride.
“Clackmannanshire Council has shown real leadership by backing transformational change, committing investment and modernising our waste and recycling system. Our belief in long term sustainability has made this achievement possible.
“This is a great example of what our local communities can achieve when we all work together to make improvements, and I would again like to thank the residents of Clackmannanshire for their commitment to recycling. When leadership, teamwork and community align around a shared goal real change happens.
“I would also encourage everyone to continue using all the recycling opportunities available, so that we can also further reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill, which is costly in both financial and environmental terms.”
