Clackmannanshire is celebrating another significant achievement in its educational performance, as the latest Scottish Government statistics show continued strong improvement in local schools. This progress highlights the effectiveness of the Council’s long-term strategy of ensuring families, children and young people will have the best possible start in life.

At the primary school level, Clackmannanshire has seen record levels of children meeting expected standards in literacy and numeracy, with 77.3% of primary school pupils achieving the expected level in numeracy and significant improvement in literacy, with the primary school pupils now achieving the national rate of 74%.

Secondary school performance has also improved, with the latest SQA results showing an increase in the number of students achieving National 5 and Higher qualifications. Additionally, for numeracy, S3 learners achieved 94.0%, which is above the national average of 90.3% and for literacy, our S3 learners reached a new high of 91.1%, above the national average of 88.3%.

Furthermore, the poverty related attainment gap between pupils from different socio-economic backgrounds continues to narrow, reflecting the impact of work related to the Scottish Attainment Challenge, which aims to ensure every child has the same opportunity to succeed.

In addition to academic achievements, Clackmannanshire has outperformed the national average in terms of overall attendance levels.

Cllr Graham Lindsay, Spokesperson for Education said: "The academic progress for Clackmannanshire young people’s education continues to improve in many of our measures. I am grateful to all our teachers, support staff and partners in our learning establishments. I would additionally like to draw attention to highlight our local supports that we are offering families which are making a massive difference; an example of this is how the Family Wellbeing Partnership has supported families. This, along with school-based supports has led to improved attendance rates of 91.1% versus a national figure of 90.3%.”

These statistics come from the Achievement of Curriculum for Excellence (ACEL) publication, which presents data on the proportion of students achieving expected Curriculum for Excellence levels in key areas like reading, writing, listening and talking, literacy, and numeracy. These figures are based on assessments for pupils in P1, P4, P7, and S3 as of June 2024.
